OUR MOST RECENT PERFORMANCE
BY JAMES SMITH, DIRECTOR
We completed our fourth season of performances with a Spring Concert on Sunday, May 5th, at First Presbyterian Church in Rocky Mount. The first half of the program began with three sacred words by Renaissance composers (Thomas Weelkes, Orlando Gibbons, and Alessandro Scarlatt) and continued with settings of four hymns, including "Shall We Gather at the River" and "Amazing Grace." The second half of the concert was devoted to joys and memories from childhood, and included a setting of American poet Sara Teasdale's "Only in Sleep." A couple of Sea Shanteys closed the program. An energetic rendition of "What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor?" brought the audience to its feet at the end. Thanks to lots of home-baked goodies provided by members of the Chamber Choir, the large audience enjoyed an after-concert reception.
I'm pleased with the sense of "family" that members of the Chamber Choir apparently feel towards one another and about the opportunity to sing together, as evidenced by the following comments several wrote following the concert.
"Singing with you all is so much fun! We are becoming a family."
"Thanks for letting me sing with y’all! As ALWAYS, I really enjoyed making music with you!"
"I am so grateful to be able to sing with all of you. Making music has lifted my spirit again!"
'I have so much fun singing with our little musical family! So glad we can make music together and enjoy each other's company as we do it!"
"This season has been so much fun singing with you all...I’m so thankful to be a part of a great choir again."
"Miss you guys already...and it’s only Thursday morning!! I so appreciate the opportunity to make beautiful music with such talented friends! It’s a highlight of my life."
The group is looking forward to singing "The National Anthem" and enjoying a fun evening together at the 7:00 Mudcats baseball game at Five County Stadium in Zebulon on Friday, June 7.
